What is Wesley Connections?
Wesley Connections is an established set of resource groups at The Wesley School, sponsored by CODI (Committee of Diversity and Inclusivity). The groups are designed to encourage all members of the Wesley community who share aspects of identity and/or parenting to get to know each other outside of events organized by the Wesley School/specific grade levels. The purpose and goal of Wesley Connections is to enhance your experience at Wesley by providing additional points of connection.
“Identity” includes all the aspects of our lives that affect how we perceive the world and how the world at large perceives us. These aspects may include ethnicity, gender, religion, country of origin, sexual orientation, family status, learning differences, and more. It is also important to remember that while members of a group may share an identifier, not everyone in the group may share the same life experiences. Wesley Connections groups should provide a safe space that may not be otherwise available for sharing common experiences. Wesley Connections can be a bridge to meeting new people in and outside of your grade level(s).
All are welcome to participate – parents, faculty/staff, admin, and allies!
Each group will collectively agree upon its purpose, whether it is an opportunity to discuss experiences and learn more about a shared identity, or simply a chance to get together and enjoy each other’s company. A group’s purpose may change from year to year.
How do I sign up?
Fill out this google form, or send an email to wc@wesleyschool.org and include your full name, email address, group(s) interested in joining, and grade(s) of child(ren), and we'll be in touch!
Can I sign up for more than one group?
Yes! You can join as many as you would like. In the spirit of inclusivity, allies are welcome in groups (unless anonymity has been specified). At the same time, allies should understand their role and honor the voices and experiences of those who share a particular identifier.
How do the groups run?
Groups are autonomous but may utilize CODI as a resource for recruiting and publicizing events. Group Leaders are responsible for planning events and moments of connection, and will send the group details on the gatherings- location, date, time, etc. The goal is to have each group meet at least once per trimester. Each group may determine whether events are intended for adults or entire families, and can be different based on each event. Individual groups may set up their own chat groups, email lists, etc. The Group Leader will liaison with the Wesley Connections Lead.
Meet-Up Details
As Wesley Connections groups set dates for their gatherings, we’ll post the dates on the external Wesley Calendar and publicize them in the Wesley Weekly and the App. For safety reasons, event details such as location will not be listed in any public facing forum. If you are interested in attending any of the group meet ups, please email wc@wesleyschool.org for event information.
What if I don't identify with any of these groups/want to start a new one?
We want to provide a space where people can get together and expand their experience at Wesley. If you do not identify with any of the groups listed and/or want to start a new one, we'd love to hear from you. Please email us at wc@wesleyschool.org.The group will be discussed at CODI before launching.
What do I need to start a group?
For a resource group to start, there needs to be at least two people interested in participating and must designate a leader as a point of contact and liaison with the Wesley Connections Leads, who are synched with CODI.
What if I'm interested in leading a particular group?
Please discuss with the current group leader, or feel free to reach out to the Wesley Connections Lead at wc@wesleyschool.org for more information.
Additional Group Guidelines:
Members of a group should maintain confidentiality – Wesley Connections groups are not designed for gossip or to put down other groups or the school, but rather are designed to affirm the group that is gathering and to provide constructive feedback to the Wesley School when appropriate.
Members of a group should honor diversity within the group.
