PA Committees 2018-2019

20th BIRTHDAY PARTY (committee chair: Kirsten Nielsen)
Wesley’s 20th Birthday Party will be a celebration of Wesley’s history for everyone who had a part in it and a toast to our future. It will be an evening event for adults (a child-friendly celebration will take place later in the year) and we will encourage the attendance of current parents as well as faculty, parents of alumni, friends and family of the school, and adult alumni themselves. The event will be held in the spring after spring break. Volunteers will help the administration to plan, organize, set up, and tear down the event. Time commitment: 1 event, event prep and 4-5 planning meetings.

BLOOD DRIVE COMMITTEE (committee chairs: Rebeccah Bush & Gary Kirkpatrick)
Through on-campus blood drives, The Wesley School community contributes to the much-needed area blood supply while modeling behavior for future blood donors. Committee members support the Blood Drive Chair(s) by helping promote the event and assisting with sign-ups. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 2 times per year.

COMMUNITY DAY - WESLEY/FUMC (committee chair: Rosemary Alcantar)
This event takes place in the fall and was designed to help maintain a strong relationship between The Wesley School and the First United Methodist Church. For this school year, the date will be Sunday, November 11, 2018. The School/Church Community Day provides an opportunity for Wesley students and their families to join members of the FUMC family for a chapel service followed by refreshments. The two organizations coordinate a donation drive for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry which both support. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 1-2 times per year.

EARTH WEEK (committee chairs: Jessica New & Amber Myers)
This committee is made up of parent volunteers that help put on events, contests, and celebrations in recognition of Earth Week in April. This committee will help come up with the yearly Earth Week theme, as well as ways to promote what we can do as a community to honor and support our environment. The committee meets during the school year.

EVENT FOOD COMMITTEE (committee chairs: Jocelyn Baker)
This committee is made up of parent volunteers to help support the healthy options provided to students during school events, such as the Holiday Boutique and Wesley Palooza. The event food committee meets during the school year to discuss upcoming events and questions brought to them by parents, but is not responsible for setting school nutrition policies.

FALL FLASH SALE (committee chairs: Lauren Blincoe)
In place of the evening vendor boutique during the holidays, again this year we will host a Fall Flash Sale on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Get your personal and holiday shopping done early this year while supporting our school and getting great deals on all sorts of items. We are looking for volunteers to help with the marketing of the event, as well as set-up and clean-up on the day of the event.

FAMILY DAY PICNIC (committee chairs: Myrna Coen, Jenny Hollier, & Kristen Pratt)
A perfect way to kick off the new school year, this off-site picnic in the fall offers plenty of Fun, Friends and Food! Relax with old friends and meet new ones at this fun-filled day of games, food, and swimming. Committee volunteers help organize the event, handle event check-in, and coordinate booth staffing. For this school year, the date will be Saturday, September 8, 2018. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 2 times per year.

FOOD PANTRY (committee chairs: Monique Schiff & Jessica Stewart)
Each Friday during the school year, The Wesley School Student Council sponsors a school wide canned food collection in support of the Inter-Faith Food Pantry. With a pre-arranged schedule, parent volunteers take turns driving the donations to the nearby collection facility. Time Commitment: approximately 4 times per year (can be more or less as desired).

GENERATIONS DAY (committee chairs: Laura Ise & Collette Nolte)
Generations Day allows Wesley students to share their school day activities with their grandparents or other relatives or friends, representing multiple generations. Guests will enjoy a morning reception, Community performances and a special classroom visit for fun activities. Volunteers are needed to help with event preparation, to take photographs, and to usher guests throughout the morning. Another perk – volunteers are the only parents allowed to attend the morning's Community. So sign up today! This event occurs the day before Spring Break in March (this coming year, Friday, March 22, 2019). Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 2 times per year.

GOBBLERS' FEAST (Feast committee chairs: Greg Baker & Adam Gershon/Game committee chairs: Eddie O'Flaherty & Sylvester Stewart)
The Friday before Thanksgiving, Wesley dads, uncles, and/or grandfathers, volunteer to serve up hamburger, hot dog, or veggie burger lunches to all the students and then dish out ice cream sundaes for dessert. Committee volunteers are asked to set up, cook, serve, and clean up (this coming year it will be on Friday, November 16, 2018). Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets 1 time per year.

HALLOWEEN DECORATING & PARADE (Decorating committee chairs: Christine O'Flaherty & Dayna Turcotte/Parade & Contest committee chair: Christa Starr)
During the last few days of October, Halloween Committee members transform The Wesley School campus into The Wesley Ghoul campus for the annual Lower School costume parade and celebration. Halloween committee members help with decorations and assist with the spooky parade and carnival. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets 1 time per year.

HOLIDAY: CHILDREN'S BOUTIQUE (committee chairs: Collette Canepa & Tina Hookom/volunteer coordinator: Michelle Mackenzie)
Get into the holiday spirit with the Wesley Holiday Boutique! During the first week in December, the Social Hall is transformed into a holiday shopping wonderland for our students. Children shop with their classes throughout the week, while committee members help with set-up, assist the younger children with shopping, wrap gifts, help with check-out, clean-up, etc. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets 1-2 times per year, depending on level of involvement.

HOLIDAY: OUTDOOR DECOR (committee chairs: Deb Fleischman & Michelle Unger)
In late November, committee members help turn the Wesley campus into a Winter Wonderland with holiday decorations. Committee members also help take down the decorations during Winter Break. Time Commitment: meets 2 times per year.

HOLIDAY: SINGING SANTAS (committee chair: Jim Pratt)
Come get in the holiday spirit by caroling with the Wesley men! Volunteers are required to attend a rehearsal leading up to the event during the Wesley Tree & Menorah Lighting in early December. All Wesley men (dads, grandads, uncles) are welcome. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 2 times per year.

HOLIDAY: WREATHS (committee chair: Dania Guaderrama)
Beautiful wreaths, hand-made by parents of The Wesley School, are consistently top-sellers at school. Committee volunteers, armed with glue guns, inspiration, and donuts, channel their inner Martha Stewart, making these one-of-a-kind creations. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets 1 time per year.

HOT LUNCH COMMITTEE (committee chair: Michelle Mackenzie)
Parent volunteers help serve students hot lunches from the fabulous kitchen on a scheduled rotation. When your shift is completed, you get to eat one of our Chef's incredible meals, too! Time Commitment: it’s up to you – volunteer for as many or few days as you like.

JOG-A-THON (committee chairs: Juli Cavanaugh & Melanie Elliott)
Parent volunteers help setup, count laps, photograph, hand out snacks, and cleanup the Jog-A-Thon. The annual Jog-A-Thon raises money for the designated service learning projects for each grade. Volunteer for the whole day, or only a portion. All grades participate in the Jog-A-Thon, so be there to cheer your grade on! For this school year, the date will be Friday, January 25, 2019. Time commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 2 times per year.

LIBRARY & LITERACY COMMITTEE (committee chairs: Kristen Lorenz & Mason Thune)
Attention all book worms! The Library & Literacy committee hosts several events throughout the year to help promote a deeper love and appreciation of reading for our students. Committee members are asked to participate in any or all of these events, including on-campus book fairs, visiting authors, book swaps, book store events, and other literary happenings. Our on-campus Book Fair for this school year will be September 24-28, 2018. Time Commitment: 2-4 annual events/meets approximately 1-3 times per year (or more depending on your desired level of involvement).

MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCES (Fall committee chairs: Debby & Grady Gonzales/Winter committee chair: Leah Mangum & Jill Whelan/Spring committee chair: Aimee Schwimmer & Laurel Thompson)
Parent volunteers help decorate, set-up, and clean-up for the Middle School Dances. There are three dances throughout the school year. Parents do not chaperone the dances -- teachers handle this responsibility. Time Commitment: 3 annual events/meets approximately 3 times per year.

MULTICULTURAL POTLUCK DINNER (committee chairs: TBD)
The Wesley School Multicultural Potluck Dinner is a yearly event that celebrates the diverse spectrum of our amazing community. It is an international evening filled with home-cooked food, conversation and incredible entertainment. This year it will take place in the spring. The entire Wesley and First United Methodist communities will be invited. We are looking for parents interested in helping and here’s how: booking entertainment, video marketing (potluck announcement and CODI student videos), raffle and merchandise sellers, supervisors of middle school volunteers, table decorating and more! This is a joint event co-hosted by the CODI committee and First United Methodist Church. All are welcome! You don’t need to attend CODI meetings to participate on the committee. Time Commitment: 1 annual event in the spring, date TBD, plus meeting 1 x month starting in Nov. or Dec.

PARTY BOOK (committee chairs: Gemma Baker & Lisa Sweeney)
Parent volunteers help host and come up with various party themes and ideas for our community. Parties themselves are considered donations to the school, and all money raised through "ticket" sales, comes directly back to Wesley. Have party ideas? SHOP WESLEY KIDS (committee chair: Claudine Yotnegparian)
Help Wesley earn money without spending any additional money! This committee works on Shop Amazon.com, our amazing gift card program, and Ralph’s cards registration. These programs give a generous percentage of our purchases back to Wesley. This committee helps promote this program and seeks new ways to help it grow. Time Commitment: meets approximately 2-3 times per year.

TEACHER APPRECIATION (committee chairs: Jamie Koustas, Laura Leighton, Tara Rossi, & Claudine Yotnegparian)
Volunteer Wesley parents treat our faculty to a delicious luncheon at a Wesley family home during this much-anticipated and appreciated spring event. Committee members help with invitations, decorations, set-up, food service, clean-up, etc. Time Commitment: 1 annual event/meets approximately 2-3 times per year.

UNIFORM RECYCLE SALES (committee chairs: Jenny Hollier, Kristen Pratt, & Deb Vaughan)
After Wesley students outgrow their uniforms, this committee collects them for purchase by other families at very reduced prices. Committee members help by setting up, sorting, and working check-out at several re-sale events held throughout the year. Time Commitment: 3 annual events/meets approximately 3 times per year.

WESLEY PALOOZA (committee chair: Jessica Stewart)
Wesley’s Got Talent! Wesley Palooza is our annual outdoor Talent Show and festival happening in the spring. All grades are invited to participate. We’re looking for parents interested in helping with event booths, set-up, rehearsals, and promotion. All are welcome! Time Commitment: 1 annual event in May/meets approximately 2-3 times before event.

WINTER WONDERLAND (committee chair: TBD)
Before heading off on Winter Break, our lower school students will dazzle us during the Lower School Holiday Concert. And, going hand-in-hand with the concert, will be our Winter Wonderland evening full of yummy food, hot cocoa, our Tree & Menorah Lighting celebration, and our Singing Santa Dads. This special evening event needs volunteers for set-up and clean-up, food vendor organizing, and much more! Time Commitment: event on December 20, 2018.

WESLEY SCHOOL COMMITTEES

ART (committee chair: Trisha Singletary)
Art is an important outlet for our Wesley students. It allows for self- expression,building of world knowledge, development of technical skills, and pure joy. The Art Committee is involved in displaying art and taking student artwork down three times a year. There is a Hispanic Heritage Exhibit in November, Chinese New Year & Black History Month Exhibit in February, and the big K-8 Art Expo in May. We set up during the day and after school. Volunteers would need a little flexibility in their schedules or be able to take an hour off from work here or there. The time commitment would be an hour of set up and an hour of take down. Precise dates will be sent out as soon as they are cleared.

COMMUNITY OF DIVERSITY & INCLUSIVITY (CODI) (committee chairs: Melanie Elliott & Bertha Muñoz)
Come help us celebrate the many differences in our community (language, religion, ethnicity, age, family structure, physicality, learning styles…etc). We appreciate all backgrounds and cultures and believe an environment rich in diversity and inclusivity is one that fosters academic and personal success. By being part of the Wesley community, you’re already a member of CODI. Please let us know if you plan on attending the meetings by signing up. The CODI committee conducts surveys, helps market guest speaker events, participates in panel discussions, and hosts the annual Multicultural Potluck Dinner in the spring. All are welcome! Time Commitment: CODI meets 1 x month usually on the 2nd Tuesday at 5:00pm. Evenings are difficult? We also meet on the 2nd Thursday at 8:00am.

PRIDE PLAY DAY(committee chair: Carol Martson)
People Respecting Individuality, Diversity & Equity - the PRIDE committee is a character development program for grades K-5. Committee members will assist in the planning and execution of the annual PRIDE Play day in June. Time Commitment: planning meeting in April; half day on June 7, 2019 for set up, break down, and supervision of event.
