3rd Grade Curriculum

Math

Everyday Math, published by University of Chicago (http://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/), provides both online and textbook structure for math learning. Each week the students problem solve using Singapore math model drawing.

Reading and Writing Workshop

Columbia University’s Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop (http://readingandwritingproject.com) forms the basis for our Language Arts. Our strong readers and writers eagerly share their voices with increasing skill.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies curriculum explores different types of communities and how people work together to use the land and its' resources. It is a great connection to both our garden and our Signature Project on Native Americans.

Science

The Next Generation Science Standards(http://www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards) provide a structure and rich options for content development as well as practices of science and engineering. Science: A Closer Look (Grades k-5) and FOSS kits (Grades 4 an 5 are among the resources available to teachers, and our school gardens increasingly foster scientific investigations.

Our students:

  • Ask questions and define problems
  • Develop and use models
  • Plan and carry out investigations
  • Analyze and interpret data
  • Use math and computational thinking
  • Construct explanations and solutions
  • Engage in arguments based on evidence
  • Obtain, evaluate, and share information
