The Wesley Middle School program (6-8) is completely departmentalized. Core classes consist of: English, mathematics (Everyday Math, pre-algebra, algebra, mathematical concepts, and geometry), integrated science, history, and Spanish. Classes are limited to eighteen students, and there are two sections of each grade level.

Regularly scheduled music and art classes enrich the core curriculum. A great deal of emphasis is placed on those skills that help children make the transition into adolescence and high school. We work on giving students the ability to solve problems with their peers as part of the peer-mentoring program.

The Middle School classes include technology components as a part of individual subjects, such as 7th grade science classes preparing PowerPoint presentations for the science fair. Special classes, such as Design Studio, rely on technology components as a part of their core objectives. In our new computer lab, students can work individually, accessing their files on the server.

We also use a system called Power School, which is basically a computerized grade book for teachers. Every Middle School family has immediate access to their child's grades.

Physical Education Program
The aim of the physical education program at The Wesley School is to develop and improve students' personal fitness and motor skills by providing developmentally appropriate activities through purposeful, creative, and enjoyable instruction. The physical education teachers concentrate on a number of factors in instruction that include repetition, recognition, cognitive thought, creativity, challenge, and fun. We believe that children learn best by doing.

Sixth Grade
In sixth grade, students follow a block schedule for their core academic courses. As a transition year, they are taught primarily by two teachers, who work closely to coordinate the program. Much of the year is spent in studies that integrate social studies and literature, math and science. A great deal of time and focus are spent on writing. Sixth graders also receive regular instruction in Spanish, and physical education, study skills and public speaking.

Seventh Grade
The seventh grade program becomes one of true departmentalization. Teachers communicate with each other regularly, and frequently the literature in English ties directly to what is studied in social studies. Spanish increases from three days per week to four. In addition to physical education and the fine arts offerings of art and music, electives include yearbook, a legal systems class, and drama, which culminates in the seventh grade play. All seventh graders take a special class in the spring that begins preparing them for the process and transition to high school.

Eighth Grade
Eighth graders continue with the same daily structure as they experienced in seventh grade. Since the faculty for eighth grade is the same as that for seventh, students and teachers begin the year familiar with each other and with the expectations of the program. Eighth graders may elect to take either Mock Trial, a citywide program that pits them against legal defense teams from other schools, or Design Studio.
