[ Wesley Community ]

The Lower School of The Wesley School consists of six self-contained classrooms (K-5) of twenty to twenty-two students. The classroom teacher teaches the core subjects with the assistance of an aide or co-teacher. Enrichment classes in computer, music, art, P.E., and foreign language ( K-5--Spanish) are taught by specialists in each area. All classes in the Lower School use Everyday Math as the basis for the mathematics program. The use of literature is an essential part of the language arts program, and the writing process spirals through the grades.

Technology
Technology at the Wesley School is incorporated into different grade levels through both pullout computer classes for grades K-5 and into classroom curricular activities throughout the grade level spectrum.

In the primary grades, students become familiar with computer components and software including Kidpix, Kidspiration, and Typing programs. Grades 4 and 5 utilize Microsoft Office products to enhance keyboarding skills, reinforce math concepts, and work on major reports and projects.

Kindergarten
The kindergarten program provides a positive introduction to the school community and solid foundation upon which to build academic skills in the elementary grades. The curriculum is designed to challenge the students with developmentally appropriate activities that incorporate a variety of learning styles. Homework is given in weekly packets, and nightly reading time with parents is expected. Writer's Workshop is introduced in the second semester to lay the groundwork for developing writing skills.

First Grade
The first grade curriculum is designed to build on the skills taught in kindergarten. New concepts and expanded activities in math, reading, and writing are introduced that incorporate a variety of learning styles. Daily homework is assigned to reinforce academic skills and to develop personal responsibility. Assignments should take about fifteen to twenty minutes to complete. In addition to this, at least fifteen minutes of reading should be completed nightly.

Second Grade
The second grade offers a self-contained classroom program with daily instruction in language arts (including reading, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and writing) and math. Social studies and science are included twice a week. Writing skills are emphasized and expanded. Novels are introduced as part of the reading program along with basic phonic and comprehension skills. Writer's Workshop is expanded to develop writing skills further.

Third Grade
The third grade program includes mathematics, language arts (reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and English) science, health, and social studies. The reading program uses novels to enhance both comprehension and the understanding of concepts related to the social studies units.

Fourth Grade
The fourth grade is a self-contained classroom program that includes instruction in mathematics, language arts (reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and English), science, health, and social studies. Alternate algorithms are introduced in math for the solution of basic operations. Reading involves novels related to the social studies topic of California history.

Fifth Grade
The fifth grade curriculum builds on the skills taught in fourth grade and emphasizes writing skills, reading comprehension, the use of reference materials, vocabulary, and the advancement of math concepts. The challenging, developmentally appropriate activities are designed to reinforce basic concepts and expand critical thinking skills.
